Instructional Coaching Sessions

Week 4 - Turning with the Ball

Warm Up - 10 mins

Traffic Lights - Each player has a ball each. The coach shouts out a color. Yellow light, players dribble slow keeping the ball close to their feet, Green Light, players run with the ball, bigger touches, faster movements. Red light, the players stop the ball quickly bringing the ball under control.

Coaching Point - Encourage each player to alternate feet whilst dribbling with the ball.

Make it Fun -  Instead of the coach shouting a color, use Yellow/Green/Red cones or pinnies and hold them above your head. It will emphasize the players to lift their heads up whilst keeping the ball close..

Musical Soccer Balls - 10 mins

Place the soccer balls in the middle of the circle and make sure you have one less soccer ball than you have players. The players start on the outside of the circle and they are not allowed to go into the circle until the whistle blows. On the whistle, the players can sprint to the soccer balls. Because there is one less soccer ball, one player will be left without a ball. The player without the ball is then removed from the game. Every round you will need to remove one soccer ball.

Coaching Point Encourage each player to alternate feet as they dribble the ball out of the inner circle, encourage different ways of turning.

Four Goal Game - 10 mins

Four pairs of players line up beside their goals. 10-12 soccer balls are placed in the middle, and on the whistle the players runs into the center to retrieve balls and score them in their own net. After scoring, they can go back and get another ball. If the player misses the net they must go retrieve it and score it before going back to the middle to get another ball. A team wins the round by being the first to score four goals. The players may not try to steal soccer balls from each other during the game. Whoever touches the ball first gets to take it to goal.
